Grassland animals ( Prairie )
-Bison and proghorns are called ruminants, they swallow tough grass, and digest it part by part with special bacteria, and microrganisms in their stomachs. Extra tough peices called cud are regurgitated, and go through the cycle again.
-Hawks, and eagles use their precise eyesight to spot mice, then catch them with their pointy talon
-Some animals like pocket gophers, prairie dogs, and badgers borrow to cool off, hide from fires, and escape from carnivores.
-Animals like rabbits, and pronghorns must run fast to escape becoming dinner. Grassland Plants ( Prairie ) -Because of the climate there are very few trees, except near water.
-Some seeds hitchhike to animals fur to help them spread out.
-Plants, especially grasses disperse huge amounts of seeds, so some are sure to survive.
-There are huge amounts of grasses on a grassland, hence grass-land, these grasses have extra long roots so that they can get water from deep under the soil.-Grasses also grow from their base allowing them to regenerate themselves when chewed off.
-Grasses have tough cell walls to help it survive, and to deter grazers.
Grassland Climate ( Prairie )- In summer temperatures can rise to 113 degrees F, and in winter drop to -49 degrees F.
- Most grasslands are very dry and windy.
-They can have severe weather with heavy rain, high winds, lightning, tornadoes, blizzards, and even golf ball sized hail.
- On average a grassland gets about 8-39 inches of precipitation per year.
-Grasslands can be called many names like the prairies, and plains of North America, the steppes of Asia, the savanas of Africa, and the pampas of South America, grasslands can also be classified as either temperate, or tropical. Temperate grasslands have a winter, and tropical grasslands have a single year round season, but they both have on average the same amount of precipitation.
Me ( Nathan Arnold )My name is Nathan Arnold. I have one brother and one sister. We live with our mother and father. Our family came from Germany in the 1880's. I like art, soccer, and reading. I like rabbits because they are interesting mammals and run fast. I like oriental art (calligraphy, painting, and origami), I also like asian food. We have a yellow lab, and two little guinea pigs. My favorite colors are green, and red.
